“1 hour COMPOSED” (deadline: 15 novembre 2018)

La call for scores “1 hour COMPOSED” è aperta a tutti i compositori, senza limiti di età e provenienza. Puoi scrivere un breve brano di teatro musicale in solo un’ora o anche meno?

Il pezzo che ci manderai deve essere:

  • per una formazione da 1 a 6 performers vocali (qualsiasi “corda”)
  • di durata massima 10′
  • con o senza pianoforte
  • composto in solo un’ora, o anche meno…

I lavori selezionati verranno eseguiti nelle prossime edizioni del Festival della Voce.

Naturalmente non potremo controllare la tempistica! Suggeriamo un approccio estemporaneo, “come se” si dovesse scrivere in un’ora. Quello che chiediamo è un pezzo di teatro musicale in cui l’idea teatrale sia predominante sulla musica. La componente più strettamente musicale può essere semplice (ad esempio conseguenza delle relazioni stabilite tra i cantanti/attori sul palcoscenico) e annotata in maniera anche non convenzionale (disegni, box improvvisativi). La finalità è ovviamente didattica, un laboratorio di teatro musicale che chieda ai cantanti di formazione belcantistica di considerarsi non solo musicisti, ma anche attori, e aprirsi alle suggestioni contemporanee. FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

– How it works, what I need to do?
The vocal performers of this call for scores (from solo to 6 elements, any range you want) will be young professionals or students of singing (belcanto-trained) attending a laboratory of Contemporary Music Theater during Festival della Voce in Castelspina (Alessandria – Italy).
The music component can be simple, notated in conventional or unconventional notations (also using drawings and guided improvisation boxes). If you want you can use also piano (one pianist available).
Our mission for this laboratory is to ask singers to be not only musicians, but also actors, and to be open to contemporary suggestions. Every piece that ask them to work on stage relations is well-come: that’s why we are encouraging composers to write without thinking to much and with a focus on theatrical ideas.
The selected pieces will be performed in the next editions of Festival della Voce.
– How does the writing session work? Do we have to be in Alessandria for writing the piece or do we have to send a score?
The call for scores asks to write the piece in 1 hour, or less. Obviously, we can’t control that! You can take your 1 hour session in your studio or wherever you prefer. We suggest you not to write in conventional ways, but to focus all your attentions on relations that singers/actors can have on stage. More theater, less music.
– Is the piece also going to be rehearsed there with performers? If yes, how many days do we have to stay there?
For this call for scores we don’t ask the composers to be in Alessandria. But we hope, in the next future, to collaborate directly with composers on music theater pieces and short operas. For the moment the selected pieces will be rehearsed during the Laboratory of Contemporary Music Theater during Festival della Voce and will have their first execution during the final concert, on Nov 18. We will make a video of them!
– Is this piece going to be performed in a “competition concert” in November 2018 in order to take part of the competition? Or are the jury just choosing the best pieces seeing paper scores?
It’s not a competition, we are looking for pieces that can be rehearsed directly on stage with students and can help us to create a repertoire. This is useful to meet composers that can work with us for other projects. The teachers of Festival della Voce will do the selection directly on the scores.

– If a composer is using text, can the text have been written either by someone else (so long as the composer has permission to use it) or outside the 1-hour time limit?

If the text has a copyright and you haven’t asked the permission to use it, it could be a problem, not for the use during the Laboratory for didactical purpose, but in case it will be included in final concert (and in other contexts). If you have the permission, that’s ok! Consider that the focus is on theater, so we will prefer texts that can be easily memorized.

– When you say “1-6 elements” and specify that a piano is available, do you mean either 1-6 singer-performers or 1-5 singer-performers plus piano? I assume that you want only what 6 singers and 1 pianist can produce, for instance, no complicated electronics or other instruments; percussion only that singers or pianist can produce?

It’s for from solo to 6 vocal performers plus 1 pianist available (so you can have maximum 7 persons on stage). You can use the piano as a percussion, and obviously, the singers can use body percussion (or use the stage as a percussion). You can use also 6 chairs and a long wood table. Electronic only if it can be played from a laptop in a stereo system.

– I know you say “any range,” but would you prefer a piece that involves a range of ranges so that more singers can potentially be involved?

We don’t know, at the moment, the range of the partecipants of the laboratory. So we suggest you to write something that can be adaptable to different contexts.
